Robert Signer, PhD, Awarded Two Major Grants to Advance Stem Cell and Hematologic Malignancy Research

Congratulations to Robert Signer, PhD, on receiving two significant grants to support his research in stem cell biology and blood cancers — a Discovery Research Grant from the Edward P. Evans Foundation and an R01 from the NIH/NHLBI. These awards will advance Dr. Signer’s investigations into how proteostasis and protein aggregation influence hematopoietic stem cell function, clonal evolution, and disease progression in bone marrow failure syndromes and myeloid malignancies.

On September 12th, the Legends of Science and Surfing Oncology Symposium united trailblazing researchers, clinicians, and cancer warriors for a powerful day of science, innovation, and shared purpose. The energy rolled right into the next day, as surfing legends hit the waves, reminding us all of the strength, courage, and spirit that drives the fight against cancer.

The 2025 Moores Cancer Center Annual Scientific Retreat will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2025, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Scripps Seaside Forum.

 

This full-day event brings together faculty, trainees, staff, and research collaborators to exchange ideas and showcase advances across the cancer research continuum — from discovery science to clinical translation. The program will feature scientific presentations, a research poster session, and networking opportunities hosted by the Office of Translational Science.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT (COE)

 

The COE team continues its mission to reduce the cancer burden in San Diego through education, prevention, and meaningful community partnerships. Last week, the team participated in several impactful initiatives:

  • Collaborated with teens from across San Diego to record The Science of Podcast, a project highlighting youth perspectives in health communication. Next live recording: November 3, 5 to 7 PM
  • Participated in the Latine Pride Festival, sharing cancer prevention resources and connecting with attendees
  • Delivered a Breast Cancer Awareness Month presentation at Lemon Grove Academy, focusing on early detection and self-advocacy. 
  • In partnership with the UCSD Equity Team, provided A1C and blood pressure checks, along with cancer education, to over 18 individuals at the Mexican Consulate. 
  • Engaged families at the YMCA’s “Day at the Bay” in conversations about healthy living and cancer risk reduction.
